December 14th vs. Orillia

From weird to Wow - Georgina had an interesting game against Orillia.  It all started one minute into the game when Orillia took a shot from the face-off.  After Bronte saved and smothered the puck, somehow the puck ended up behind her.  When the referee fished out the scoring puck, Bronte handed him the puck she saved - yes there were TWO pucks!!  Our pleas fell on deaf ears and Orillia went up 1-0.  Two minutes later Bianca shelved one top side on the Orillia net.  This was a sign of things to come for Bianca.  Shannon followed with a nice power play effort also roofing the puck on the Orillia goalie.  Another power play effort in the second saw Kate deliver a hard shot at close range that bounced over the Orillia goalie's stick and into the net.  The rest of the game belonged to Bianca as she delivered her second goal with 5 minutes to go in the second.  A few minutes into the third period, Bianca found herself all alone and with a beautiful deak, tucked the puck home to complete her hat trick.  Georgina won 5-1.  Once again, the assists were not recorded as expected.  Eliminating the obvious mistakes, assists went to Jade, Nyki, Mackenzie and Ashley.

December 13th vs. Oakville

The Hawks were up for a challenge tonight as they faced Oakville.  Oakville has been tearing up the division and they set their sights on Georgina.  The Hawks were up one point to Oakville at the beginning of this game.  Georgina needed to start strong, stay strong and play their game.  We were not dissappointed!!  The Hawks commanded the first period as they handily outshot Oakville but unfortunately they weren't able to penetrate far enough into the zone.  Oakville came back strong in the second and the play stayed even in shots and goals.  Bronte kept us strong shutting the door on a 2nd period flurry by Oakville.  The Hawks had their own chances as they were able to penetrate deeper into the zone.  As with previous games, Georgina started to produce in the third.  With Oakville pressing just as hard, our defence kept the goal mouth clear giving our offense the chance they need to win.  A mid-period rush saw Jillian dig to push the puck to the front of the net with a waiting Chelsea to tuck it into the right side.  Undaunted, Oakville poured it on and Georgina luckily held them off.  Oakville pulled their goalie with 24 seconds to play with a Georgina zone face-off.  Tori won the face-off and moved it back allowing Shannon and Brianne to work the clearing.  Tense moments in front of net eventually found the puck on Tori's stick as she moved the puck up the far side.  With Brianne's help, Tori managed to clear the zone to ChelseaChelsea backhanded the puck for some additional clearing strength and watched the puck slide into the Oakville net.  An awesome game played by all.  Georgina won 2-0.  The lone assist went to Jillian.

December 12th vs. Barrie

Let's talk about the third period of this game, as our Hawks were not there in the first 2 periods.  At the second intermission, The Hawks were outshooting Barrie 8-7 - yup, that's it!!!  Now for the third...  A gorgeous drive by Kate ending up with a quick backhand on net which deflected to the front of the net to Nyki's stick - no mistake, Nyki tucked it home.  Georgina found themselves on a power play 5 minutes later and a mixup between Tori and Chelsea resulted in a short feed to Chelsea and she danced around the defence to lift one past the Barrie Goalie.  Our last marker came of a board shot by Nyki at centre ice that had eyes for an empty net.  Georgina won 3-0.  Assists went to Kate (2) and Tori.

Peterborough Tournament Final Game vs. Carleton Place

This time a light lunch for the players and some effective mental and physical preparation for the final seemed to focus our girls for the pending task.  The Coaches were heads down planning this game as they took Peter's shot diagram from game 4 to study it and work with the kids to alter their game plan to hopefully keep Carleton at bay.  Unfortunately, Georgina was unable to hold off the Cyclonic pressure from Carleton being swamped in shots 11-2 and down 2-0 at the end of the first.  This time, Georgina penalties seemed to do us in as the girls showed their frustration with the inconsistent officiating over the course of six games.  Even Ashley took out one of the refs (completely accidental of course).  Carleton capped their first goal on the power play and the second came at the hands of jabbing and slashing Bronte to push the puck under her.  Another similar event in the third period was called back - luckily.  Georgina only offered 10 shots of opposition with one 1 shot from the slot - Carleton was in a class of their own.  The girls proved they could match-up against Carleton in a second game but staying out the box is the key to playing Carleton.

Peterborough Tournament Semi-final Game vs. Lindsay

The game story synopsis was simple - both Mother Nature and the Hawks were winners!!  A horrible drive at 6 in the morning on Sunday had all the Hawks families stressed upon arrival.  From The Goldrings and Sings skiing on wheels across Concession 7; Susan and Jillian braving the white out on Hwy 12 and the Cornthwaites and Bennetts with a pit stop - yes, we all made it!!  For this game, the Hawks were strong and consistent through the whole game.  They were up 1-0 at the end of the first off a goal by KateNyki capped off another goal halfway through the 2nd but Lindsay answered back closing the gap to 1.  Lindsay's hard and aggressive play was not in the favour of the referees.  Lindsay found themselves in the box when Georgina scored their 3rd as Jade slapped home a lone puck in the crease.  Georgina setup their trap in the third period, however Lindsay managed to come back within 1.  The Hawks held off a late third period rush by Lindsay as they pulled their goalie on a power play.  Nail-biting final 2 minutes, but the parents (and players) survived to claim the semi-final 3-2 and move on to face Carleton in the final.  Unfortunately, the refs and timekeepers messed up the goals and assists so I can only guess who really got them.  The whole team was stellar but the assists I have on record (minus the obvious mistakes) go to Chelsea, Tori, Jillian and Emma.

Peterborough Tournament Game 4 vs. Carleton

A quick breakfast for the whole team at Smitty's and back to the ice for the Hawk's final game of the round robin.  Both Georgina and Carleton entered this game undefeated - the winner taking the honour of first place and a bye into the finals.  All the parents were cheering on their Hawks for the win (or was it to avoid the early drive the next morning).  Another flat first period seemed to plague the Hawks as they were still digesting pancakes.  Bronte and the defence managed to hold off the Cyclones for 10 minutes.  Unfortunately it went downhill from there. The Hawks found themselves down 3-0 after 8 minutes into the second.  An awesome slap shot by Bridget just missed the right side of the net, bounced back off the boards right to Ashley's stick in front on the net - Ashley made no mistake burying the puck behind the Carleton goalie.  Unfortunately, two minutes later, we were down 4-1.  Carleton never let up at this point - their passing, skating, checking and positioning simply outlasted the Hawks.  The game ended in the Cyclones favour, 6-1. Our lone assist went to Bridget.

Peterborough Tournament Game 3 vs. Lindsay

The Hawks started early on Saturday morning facing Lindsay.  The early morning game and long drive (for some) seemed to leave the team flat.  The first period was sluggish on both sides as everyone seemed to be shaking the sleep off.  Tying in shots at 4-4 after the first, no one took an advantage.  17 seconds into the 2nd period Kate snuck in and around the back of the net and fed Nyki a little chip with which she buried behind the Lindsay net - Hawks up 1-0.  Two minutes later, Lindsay tied it up on a breakaway that beat Bronte high on the glove side.  Lindsay took the lead on another breakaway only 4 minutes later - the Hawks faced their first game being behind in the score.  The Hawks responded in the third as they pummeled the Lindsay net.  Chelsea tied it up on a goal mouth shot through the 5-hole.  Back on even ground, it looked like this game was going to end a tie, but Tori broke the tie with an unassisted effort hard and down low that rung off the back bar of the net and right back out - special thanks to the ref for being in the right position to see that one.  The Hawks finished the game winning 3-2.  Assists went to Kate, Jillian, Shannon and Emma.

Peterborough Tournament Game 2 vs. Oshawa

Awesome!!!  Definitely the most exciting game of hockey seen by all so far.  The Hawks were pumped and ready for Oshawa.  Expecting a tough game, Georgina played hard, fast and sure.  Bronte was awesome and seemed fired up with a little anger adrenalin (ask Bronte for details).  The Hawks went up quickly with two goals in the first.  Shannon took a point shot that was perfectly deflected by Nyki over the goalie and in.  Bianca got the second marker on a power play with a beautiful top corner shot.  Oshawa came back quickly in the second to ties things up at two.  Unphased, Shannon unloaded another point shot that beat the Oshawa goalie to put us up 3-2.  We continued into the third and got an early power play goal as Brianne stopped a clearing shot by Oshawa, fed Jade in front of the net and she buried it to make it 4-2 - and so it stood.  Assists were credited to Bridget (2), Emma, Brianne, Kate and Shannon.

Peterborough Tournament Game 1 vs. Peterborough

A long drive and early morning for most seemed to cause a 2 period lag in the Hawks.  Being outshot in the first and then barely outshooting Peterborough in the second, we spent two periods with Bronte and the Defence holding the fort.  It wasn't until the third when Bianca roofed our first goal on a breakaway.  The Hawks seemed to come alive in the third as we kept the play in the Peterborough end for most of it.  A shot by Ashley and rebound setup the next goal as Jade pounced on the loose puck to make it 2-0 for the Hawks.  The game ended with that - getting help from Nyki and Ashley on the two goals.

November 30th vs. Mississauga

Another late Sunday game seemed to take its toll on the Hawks.  With a winter storm just starting before game time, the whole team luckily made it to the Iceland Arena.  However, getting home was tough!  Well, the Hawks had it tough with Mississauga.  Starting the third period still tied at 0-0, the Hawks had a hard time making the passes and beating the Mississauga goalie.  Finally, after a scramble in front of the Mississauga net, Nyki back-handed one home in the open side.  The third period continued with more tight play from both sides, but penalties are what opened things up.  Jillian capitalized on a loose puck in front the Mississauga net, during our power play, and put it through the goalie's legs.  A minute later Nyki buried one of her wrap arounds on another Georgina power play.  With only a minute to go in the game, Bianca sent one careening off the goalie right to Jade's stick who then buried the puck into the open side.  This was an even strength goal, but only 5 seconds after Mississauga left the box.  The Hawks finished with a 4-0 win with helpers from Kate (2), Bianca, Emma and Bridget.

November 28th vs. Etobicoke

Itching to play after a week off, Georgina was all set to get back to league play.  Tonight's game saw us playing the 2nd place team, Etobicoke.  The game started very even on both sides.  A breakaway by Chelsea opened up the scoring in the first period.  Georgina stuck to their game plan and some awesome play by the whole defensive crew kept the Dolphins at bay.  A beautiful lead pass by Emma met Bianca's stick and she skated in all alone for the Hawk's second goal.  Chelsea scored her second of the night in the third period on another breakaway.  The game ended with a 3-0 win for the Hawks - great job girls!  Assists were credited to Emma and Tori.  Special mention has to go to Jillian for almost single-handedly killing off Bianca's penalty in the first period - awesome forechecking!

Kitchener Fallfest - Final vs. Kitchener

Fresh from watching the Peewee C team win their division at Fallfest, the Peewee B's were intent on giving Georgina another championship.  With the awesome support of the other Georgina teams in attendance, we showed strong for this final.  The Hawks started strong once again and owned the play for the first 5 minutes of the first period.  When Kitchener finally got down to our end, they scored quick and went up 1-0.  A Georgina penalty only lasted 15 seconds as Kitchener scored to make it 2-0.  After only 9 minutes of play, Georgina found themselves behind 3-0.  The Hawks were back in the second - they owned this period without allowing a single shot all period.  Halfway through the 2nd, Brianne fed Bianca a lead pass which resulted in a picture perfect break away goal to make it 3-1.  Georgina poured it on in the third period but the Kitchener goalie was too strong.  Georgina settled for the runner-up silver medal.  The lone assist went to Brianne.

Kitchener Fallfest - Semi Final vs. Guelph

Not slush nor snow nor ice nor freezing rain can keep us away from the semi-final game against Guelph.  The weather was horrible but the hockey was fantastic.  As Guelph warmed up, a few parents already showed signs of worry - we all knew this game would be tough.  Guelph pressed early in the first period being allowed to come in close and take shot after shot.  They finally got one past Bronte and went up 1-0.  The Hawks were intent on playing two games on Sunday and began to pour it on.  Tori answered with a few minutes left in the 1st period with a door-mouth shot past the Guelph goalie.  The second period remained dead-locked at 1-1 as Georgina spent most of the period fending off Guelph.  Chelsea opened the scoring in the third period with a beautiful shot over the Guelph goalie and under the crossbar.  Guelph poured it on again but our defence proved too strong and Bronte was amazing.  Chelsea sealed the deal with just under 4 minutes to go in the third with a quick shot through the legs of the Guelph goalie - Georgina 3-1.  The game ended 3-1 and Georgina won the chance to meet Kitchener in the final.  Assists went to Jillian (3), Chelsea and Tori.

Kitchener Fallfest - Quarter Final vs. Sarnia

Our 3rd game found us at Sportsworld in the South end of town.  Everyone appeared eager to play as we entered the elimination rounds.  The game started quick with Georgina controlling from the get-go.  Only 2 minutes into the game and Bianca put Georgina on the board.  A few minutes later, Tori made it 2-0.  In the 2nd period, Sarnia put an end-to-end rush together that beat Bronte reducing our lead to 2-1.  Not to be outdone, Georgina sought the 2 goal cushion once again and with 3 minutes left in the 2nd period, Tori put one home making it 3-1.  The third period had many chances for us but we couldn't put one past the Sarnia goalie.  The Hawks move on to the Semis with a 3-1 win.  Assists went to Ashley, Jillian, Chelsea and Shannon.

Kitchener Fallfest - Game 2 vs. London

Game 2 had us meeting the Devilettes from London.  London was similar in size to us so we were unsure what to expect.  The atmosphere of the main pad at the Kitchener Aud made it feel special.  Once again, the first period yielded no production from either side except for our hammering their net with 11 shots.  Bianca found the back of the net early in the second on a power play goal only to have London answer back with their own power play goal to tie things at 1.  London took the lead in the third period after an own deflection beat Bronte.  Georgina battled back and with 3 minutes to go in the game, Mackenzie roofed the puck to tie the game at 2 - and so it ended.  Assists went to Chelsea and Brianne.

Kitchener Fallfest - Game 1 vs. North Halton

All the drama of game 1 occurred before the game as Tournament Organizers guided the Beggs toward the Activa Sportsplex in Kitchener.  Anyone else relying on their GPS became equally lost.  The pre-game stress seemed to translate onto the ice as the Hawks started flat.  30 seconds into the 2nd period, Brianne stole one from North Halton and snapped it home to make it 1-0 Georgina.  Two minutes later, Nykita wrapped one in as we all watched in awe as Nykita's arms and stick completed the wrap before the rest of her!  Tori finished things off with a wide open side for her taking - as a deflection off of Bianca's shot landed on Tori's stick.  Georgina wins game one 3-0.  Assists are credited to Emma, Mackenzie and Bianca.  We outshot North Halton 18-10.

Sunday Night in Oriole Park vs. Leaside - November 9th

Leaside brought fire to their game and caught Georgina off guard during the first period.  The Hawks found themselves sitting in the penalty box for most of the first period, being penalized for hard defence and tenacious play.  Leaside went up 1-0 on a power-play goal near the end of the first.  Michele and the Coaches settled things down during intermission and got the girls to play their game.  Leaside struck first in the second but their 2 goal lead was short-lived as Chelsea tucked home a deflection off of Shannon's point shot.  Later in the second, Chelsea scored again to tie things up.  The third period was all Georgina but we were unable to secure a win.  Aside from Chelsea's two goals and Shannon's assist, Bianca and Mackenzie received assists as well.  The Hawks remain undefeated after 5 league games.

November 8th vs. Barrie

Our Hawks were overwhelmed by the size of the change room!  Hats off to Barrie and the new Holly Recreational Centre - truly an amazing facility!  This game started tentative and safe for both sides.  With Chelsea playing sick and Emma on the sidelines - the Hawks held back waiting to find their groove.  Barrie started strong but were held by our defence until we started taking distance shots.  As we got closer to the goal before shooting, our chances got stronger until with only 7 seconds left in the first period, Ashley tucked one home off a rebound during a Georgina power play.  It wasn't until the third period when Bianca scored on a quick 5-hole shot during 4 on 4 play.  A slew of third period Georgina penalties kept us on our heals as Barrie took chance after chance - but the Hawks prevailed with a 2-0 win.  Assists came at the hands of Bianca, Ashley, and Chelsea.

First League Game vs. North Simcoe - October 24

Our first game had us hosting North Simcoe.  The Hawks and Capitals started the game fairly even as the Capitals pressed early with only the Hawks to respond with their own pressure.  Back and forth they went until Kate found the back of the net with help from Nykita and Emma. At this point, the Hawks shots started to accumlate but all we could muster was ringing the puck off the post!!  North Simcoe came back on a power play to tie things up, but two minutes later, Tori found the back of the net - one of two markers she got that night. Our pressure continued into the third period as two quick goals by Chelsea and Tori sealed the deal. Further assists came from Chelsea, Ashley, Jade and Jillian.

Friday Night Fever - Exhibition Game vs. Leaside

On October 3rd, the Goldenhawks found themselves at the Rinx Arena in North York - in the midst of one of the oldest outlet shopping areas in Toronto.  Our test tonight is our host, the Leaside Wildcats.  Immediately off the faceoff, Nykita found the back of the net only 9 seconds into the game.  Only 8 seconds later, Kate shot one home.  The game began to settle down at this point and within 3 minutes, Leaside scored their first.  Must be the centre ice face-off, but the Hawks streaked in from that face-off to score again courtesy of Bianca.  It wasn't until the third period when Kate scored her second goal - once again, 8 seconds from the period starting face-off.  The game ended 4-1 in the Hawks favour.  Everyone executed the game plan flawlessly.  Assists go to Kate, Chelsea and Mackenzie.

Oshawa Tournament - Quarter-Final vs. Scarborough

space

The Hawks advanced to the quarter finals only to meet their regular season rivals, the Scarborough Sharks.  The Sharks sported a perfect record in the round robin so the Hawks knew they had a tough battle ahead.  Georgina came on strong and kept the pressure all through the game as they outshot Scarborough 14-9.  Unfortunately, the Sharks were able to capitalize on their opportunities.  The Sharks opened the scoring with a power play goal in the first period.  Although the Hawks kept battling, Scarborough put the game out of reach in the third with a quick goal and a 2-0 lead.  The Sharks instantly played defensive from that point by tying up the neutral zone thus holding the Hawks at bay.  Georgina can be proud of their efforts this past weekend and knowing that they were able to remain competitive against Scarborough, who eventually won the Peewee B Championship at the Oshawa Tournament.
